Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Receives 2020 IJIS Institute Innovation Award

Ashburn, Va., March 18, 2020 – The IJIS Institute recently awarded the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) and the Indy Public Safety Foundation with the 2020 IJIS Institute Innovation Award for the implementation of their B. Link project. The honor was presented at the IJIS Institute’s National Symposium Award Reception on February 26, 2020, in Tysons Corner, VA.

The award celebrates the accomplishments of the Indianapolis public safety community along with industry partner and IJIS member company Motorola Solutions. B. Link or Business Link Indy leverages technology to connect IMPD with security camera systems owned by residents and businesses to improve police response, further investigations, and deter crime. Through B. Link Indy, residents can register their security cameras with IMPD, while B. Link Pro allows businesses to use one or more security cameras to IMPD’s Incident Analysis Center. By linking these cameras together, IMPD can access video footage to help solve crimes faster and potentially save lives.

The annual IJIS Institute Innovation Award, first presented in 2009, recognizes technical innovation that has significantly contributed to the advancement of information sharing and the IJIS Institute mission in major public sector domains that are IJIS areas of focus. These areas include Criminal Justice, Public Safety, Homeland Security, Health and Human Services, and Transportation. The award, which is open to any company providing solutions within these domains, is for a team achievement by an industry partner and a federal, state, local, or tribal agency.

In recognition of his immense contribution to the safety and justice community nationally, the IJIS Institute Executive Director, Ashwini Jarral, announced that future IJIS Institute innovation awards will be entitled the Thomas J. O’Reilly Innovation Award. Thomas O’Reilly dedicated over 45 years of his life to public service. His work included serving as Administrator for the NJ Department of Public Safety overseeing NJ State Police, Homeland Security and criminal prosecution, as well as Directing the Nationwide SAR Initiative (NSI) on behalf of the DOJ enabling fusion centers to share critical data post 9/11. Most recently he led the Center on Policing at Rutgers University. He was an invaluable member of the IJIS community, a staunch supporter of the IJIS mission, and an inspiration in solving community challenges, building mutually trusting relationships, and developing successful models for our country.
