Awards Given by the IJIS Institute

Robert P. Shumate National Public Safety and Justice Contributor to Excellence Award

The Robert P. Shumate National Public Safety and Justice Contributor to Excellence Award, named for the first president of the IJIS Institute, is presented annually by the IJIS Institute to an individual from either industry or the public sector that has made the most valuable contribution to justice and public safety information sharing over his or her career. Candidates for the award can only be nominated by IJIS Institute members, and they represent the highest level of conviction to the IJIS Institute mission.

Nominations can be made ONLY by IJIS Institute Members.

The IJIS Institute Thomas J. O'Reilly Innovation Award

The annual IJIS Institute Thomas J. O'Reilly Innovation Award, which was first presented in 2009, recognizes technical innovation that has significantly contributed to the advancement of information sharing and the IJIS Institute mission in major public sector domains that are IJIS areas of focus:

  • Criminal Justice (Law Enforcement, Corrections, Courts)
  • Public Safety (Fire, Emergency Management Services, Emergency Management)
  • Homeland Security
  • Health and Human Services
  • Transportation

This award is for team achievement between an industry partner(s) and one or more practitioner agencies.

The IJIS Institute Corrections Information Technology Recognition

The inaugural Corrections Advisory Committee Information Technology Recognition, honors a team achievement for technical innovation between industry partner(s) and one or more practitioner agencies that significantly contributed to the advancement of corrections information technology in the public sector. 

This process is an open competition. Neither nominators or nominees are required to be members of the IJIS Institute. If a government agency is the submitter, a letter approving the nomination must be submitted by the agency's Chief Information Officer or equivalent as part of the submission package.

Awards Received by the IJIS Institute

The following awards were received by the IJIS Institute either for its own efforts or for collaborative efforts with members, alliance partners, or government agencies.

Open Geospatial Consortium Distinguished Member Award 

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) awarded the IJIS Institute OGC’s 2017 Distinguished Member Award. The OGC Board recognized the IJIS Institute’s commitment to advancing interoperability that supported the development of national standards and policy, in turn enabling information sharing in the public safety, justice, and homeland security communities.

GovTech Top 100 Brands

In December 2016, the IJIS Institute was placed on the GovTech Top 100 Brands list. The list, compiled by, ranked the most the influential brands in GovTech. See the full report here.

2009 Washingtonian Magazine Great Place to Work

Nominated by its employees, the IJIS Institute is a winner of Washingtonian magazine’s bi-annual Great Places to Work award. The Institute won in the category of Treated Royally for employee pay and benefits, and received high marks from employees for job flexibility and career advancement.

Appreciation: Cisco Systems, Inc.

Cisco Systems Inc. presented an award to executive director Paul Wormeli and the IJIS Institute for the Institute's work in leading the 2008 workshop on global information sharing for law enforcement at the 2008 Public Services Summit. This annual event is sponsored by CISCO and the City of Stockholm, Sweden. The workshop and the Public Services Summit engage world leaders in topics related to improving public service. (August 2009).

Appreciation: Northern Mariana Islands CJIS Network

The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Criminal Justice Information Systems Network presented an aware of appreciation to the IJIS Institute in recognition of valuable contributions related to a technology assistance evaluation (November 2008).

2008 eC3 Excellence Award to the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program

The Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) Information Exchange (PMIX) project was selected as an award winner in the 2008 eC3 Excellence Awards. The PMP Information Exchange project, which helps states exchange dispensed controlled-substance prescription data, is a partnership effort of the IJIS Institute and the Bureau of Justice Assistance, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice.

Recognition: The Council of Excellence in Government

The Council of Excellence in Government (absorbed into the Partnership for Public Service in 2009) recognized the successful public/private partnership of the Bureau of Justice Assistance and the IJIS Institute (April 2007). The BJA/IJIS Institute partnership demonstrated a proven model of a new way to engage the private sector in directly assisting governmental agencies through innovative problem solving and collaboration.

Business Week Web Smart 50 Award

Shortly after its implementation in 2005, the knowledge management system established by the IJIS Institute to share knowledge related to improving information sharing in the public safety and justice world won the Business Week Web Smart 50 award in the category of collaboration uses of the web. This system has been a significant service to both industry and practitioners in building a framework for collaboration.
