The Law Enforcement – Image Technology Task Force (LE-ITTF) is addressing the growing use of imaging technologies employed by law enforcement organizations at the federal, state, and local levels. The first initiative undertaken by the Task Force is addressing issues and concerns raised over Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) in law enforcement operational (i.e., patrol and traffic) and investigative activities. The LE-ITTF is also recommending guidelines that include establishing the business case, standardizing metrics and reporting, and addressing retention, auditing, and access control. These recommendations are to help both law enforcement executives and the provider community in understanding the challenges with current technology and its use, as well as to frame the future requirements for these systems. This IJIS Institute Webinar highlights some of the challenges raised about ALPR operations and highlight the outcomes to date from the Task Force’s efforts.
